The building has been designed as a steel framed structure. Pile foundations have been used for the project due to the number of very large mature trees within and around the site. The shell has been designed using a mixture of facing brickwork and timber cladding to complement the existing school building.

The building has a flat roof consisting of profiled metal decking with mono-pitched roof lights. The floor has been designed as a composite concrete floor construction.
| The site of the extension was located in a sloping landscaped area to the south west side of the existing school building. Due to the site restrictions the plan adopted was linear in form with classrooms on two levels opening off broad central circulation area. |
Stairs and evacuation lifts have been located at the ends of the main circulation space. The building also accommodates special rooms such as a hydrotherapy pool, hygiene rooms, physio and multi sensory rooms. Also included is a music room.
The general principle of the scheme has been to make a positive contribution to the overall environment, whilst also addressing the needs of the users in terms of functionality of the building.
The design objectives were as follows: |
To achieve a design layout and massing which blend in with the existing school building?
To create visual variety in material use and scale to respect the character of the area. |
